Anglerfish are easily the stuff of nightmares. Their whole bodies seem to consist mostly of a huge mouth filled with razor sharp teeth accompanied by small, beady eyes. Their most prominent feature however is the lure growing out above their heads. They get their name from the way they use that lure to angle for fish. It can reshape its jaws and stomach so that it’s able to eat prey twice its own size.

Now mind you, all of the above only applies to the female of the species. The male anglerfish gets a much more raw deal. It’s born much, much smaller than the female and its entire mission in life is to find a female and attach itself to it. And I mean that quite literally. The male anglerfish has a fabulous sense of smell which it uses to find a female. When it does find the female it will literally bite into it and start melting. It continues melting until everything except its gonads has been assimilated into the female.
