Puffins are small and very odd birds. They’re a bit smaller than a typical house cat and they live in archipelagos in the northern seas (North Pacific Ocean and North Atlantic Ocean). What makes them a bit odd is that their wings have adapted to swimming as well as flying. What they do, is they fly pretty low over the ocean and when appropriate, they dive and swim the rest of the way.
The absolute coolest thing about puffins is their beak. That colorful, huge beak you see in the pictures on either side of this text is the mating beak. These birds actually grow a new, bigger beak just for the breeding season. When it’s done, they’ll just shed it as if it’s no big deal.
