As per usual, I am taking part in NaNoWriMo this year! Just in case you haven’t encountered this particular piece of internet culture before, NaNoWriMo is short for National Novel Writing Month. It brings together professionals and hobbyists to try and write 50 000 words in the month of November. Most adult novels clock in around twice that, but 50 000 words is roughly the size of Aldous Huxley’s Brave New World. And also a nice round number.

Last month, I started working on a new book and I’m hoping to finish it over NaNoWriMo. It’s set in an Alternate Universe Finland over the last Finnish Crusades, when the Swedish king’s crusade reached all the way to Karelia. The Finnish Crusades were mostly a lot less bloody than the crusades in the Middle East and such it is here as well. The main character is a witch who’s a woman and dealing with those consequences – most Finnish witches were men, even the rare ones burned at the stake.

As I mentioned, I’ve already started drafting this book and I started NaNoWriMo with 13 000 words in the manuscript. And yes, that number involved stopping in the middle of a sentence. And yes, I did remember where I was going with it. Anyway, because of this early start, I’m hoping to get to at least 63 000 words by the end of NaNoWriMo, and if I get to 70 000, I’ll be delighted beyond measure.

Over on YouTube, I’m at least going to try doing a 30 day challenge of checking in every day regarding NaNoWriMo. I’m calling the series NinaWriMo 2020 because I have no shame. Subscribe and ring the bell for notifications if you feel like doing so!

And if you are doing NaNoWriMo, good luck and happy writing!
